I,Aphrodite
I, Aphrodite, explore the emotional conflict between the desire to be chosen and the fear of losing selfhood. Drawing on themes embodied by Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, desire, longing, and beauty, I use digital self-portraiture to analyze how desire and intimacy can construct femininity and visibility through desirability and the longing to be meaningfully chosen, while reclaiming self-reliance without sacrificing individuality. Through layered photographic imagery, repeated floral symbolism, shells, and self-portraiture, the work constructs a symbolic language that shifts between attachment, distance, vulnerability, and control. The roses and deep red palette evoke desire, beauty, growth, and transformation. The marble-like skin texture in the larger print aligns with classical representations of Aphrodite, suggesting idealized beauty and emotional restraint. Through the vehicle of self-portraiture, I am reclaiming Aphrodite’s gaze and my own agency.
