Becoming the Idol
What does it mean to be seen, admired, and idealised?
“Becoming the Idol” captures the idea of being idealised, seen, admired and obsessed through the gaze of an admirer/fan. Growing up, I often heard stories from friends covering the walls of their bedrooms with photo collages of their favourite singers, movie actors, and TV show characters. Within this series, it recreates visual culture using myself. Each panel layers self-portraits, fragmented texts, and symbolic motifs to imitate the way admirers form originalities of the figures they worship. These collage portraits not only reflect the projection of how idols are idealised and interpreted. But it also portrays not only who I am as a person, but of how I might be viewed in someone else’s eyes.
